      First of all, “could existed” is “modal + Verb 2”, and there isn’t such a usage. Maybe you supposed it as “could exist”. I will try to explain the present and past usage of expressing degrees of certainty as much as possible for you.

      DEGREES OF CERTAINTY: PRESENT TIME (must/may/might/could + V1)
      – Why isn’t John in class?
      – 100% sure : He is sick.
      – 95% sure : He MUST be sick.
      – Less than 50% sure : He MAY/MIGHT/COULD be sick.

      DEGREES OF CERTAINTY: PAST TIME (must/may/might/could + have + V3)
      – Why wasn’t Mary in class?
      – 100% sure : She was sick.
      – 95% sure : She must have been sick.
      – Less than 50% sure : She may/might/could have been sick.
